MAYBE MORE THAN LOVE

SOPHIA LE FRAGA

Ochi Projects is pleased to present Maybe More Than Love, a solo exhibition of Los Angeles-based artist Sophia Le Fraga.

Maybe More Than Love is a new body of work stemming from a series of closed caption collages Le Fraga began in 2014 while in residence at LUMA Foundation in Zurich. The collages, which borrow subtitled stills from films and TV shows, aim to generate poetry out of the language of contemporary culture. For this exhibition, the artist has turned the collages into postcards, inviting the viewer both to recontextualize popular moments from film and television, as well as to generate their own letters with the work.

In her practice, Le Fraga mines the internet for language as a way to explore communication in virtual spaces. Her first book, I DON'T WANT ANYTHING TO DO WITH THE INTERNET (2012), is made up of typewritten, unbound poems, informally commissioned by strangers and friends, using language from their own social media pages. The epistolary work processes internet language through an analog medium, and her subsequent projects similarly explore the binaries of formal and innovative language, and of digital and obsolete technologies.

Maybe More Than Love, which was created during the coronavirus pandemic, moves from the screen into the physical world so as to jolt the viewer from the liminal space brought on by extensive isolation and prolonged consumption of visual content. In its postcard form, the work calls back to Le Fraga's I DON'T WANT ANYTHING TO DO WITH THE INTERNET, with the theme of letter-writing at its center.

Sophia Le Fraga's text-based work considers how language evolves in digital spaces. Her practice makes use of poetry, video, installation, photography, curation, and new media. Le Fraga is the author of The Anti-Plays (Gauss PDF 2015), literallydead (Spork 2015), I RL, YOU RL ( minuteBOOKS  2013, Troll Thread 2014), I DON'T WANT ANYTHING TO DO WITH THE INTERNET (KTBAFC 2012), and the artist book Other Titles by Sophia Le Fraga (If a Leaf Falls 2016).

Le Fraga has exhibited or performed at the MOCA, Los Angeles; MoMA PS1's "Greater New York," New York; Camden Arts Center, UK; Centre d'Art Contemporain, Geneva; and PERFORMA15. She holds a BA in linguistics and poetry from NYU, and matriculated in the photography discipline at Bard MFA. Her work has been featured in Best American Experimental Writing, The Cut, BOMB Magazine, ELLE, VICE, Texte zur Kunst, and Dazed. Le Fraga is the founding editor of No Issue, a multimedia Instagram publication.
